Choosing Necklaces for Fun and Fashion

Necklaces are some of the most ancient types of jewelry. Even in prehistoric times, people wore necklaces crafted from natural materials like shells, stones, feathers and plant materials. Back then, necklaces were not worn for simple ornamentation, but to denote some sort of meaning. Jewelry was worn to provide protection, bring good luck, or show social status. These days, things are a little different. While people do wear jewelry because it has special meaning for them, others often wear jewelry to accent their outfits.

Today's necklace trends are as varied as the fashion you see. There is no one particular type of necklace that's more fashionable than another, but there are some popular styles that you may want to consider. One such style is the ultra-long necklace. These necklaces are usually gold or silver chains featuring pendants which hang almost to belly button level. They mimic the popular dangling chandelier earrings that are in demand these days.

Another popular style of necklace is the choker. Chokers are often either made with a chain, ribbon, or cord crafted from silk or leather. On the choker is suspended a pendant. Chokers are often worn with lower cut tops and sometimes as part of a more gothic or old-fashioned look. You'll find choker pendants that are ornate, bejeweled crosses, hearts, cameos or other shapes. Speaking of cameos, Victorian style necklaces are big as well. This may include beaded chains that feature tiers of sparkling ornamentation. Most of these types of necklaces fall into the costume jewelry category rather than the fine jewelry category.

Fine jewelry necklaces are always in fashion and often have special significance for the wearer. One popular type of pendant is the circle, which is often given as a gift of affection and adorned with sparkling diamonds or cubic zirconia. Diamond solitaire pendants are hot these days also. The size of these pendants can range from small to rather large, although the larger ones are often simulated diamond. Some women prefer simulated diamonds, as they are much less expensive and just as beautiful.

Other popular types of fine jewelry necklaces are those exchanged by best friends or couples. Often, this includes a pendant that is in two pieces that fit together. Sometimes, one part of the necklace is a lock, and the other is a key. These types of necklaces denote everlasting friendship, love and commitment.
